Combo Diabetes Drug Tandemact Approved for Sale in Europe

Takeda Pharmaceutical Company announced on Jan. 17th that it has received European Commission approval to market its combination diabetes drug Tandemact for treatment of type 2 diabetes in Europe.

Tandemact is a combination of Actos (pioglitazone HCl), Takeda's diabetes drug which targets insulin resistance, and glimepiride, which acts primarily by increasing the amount of insulin produced by the pancreas.

These medications work in combination to help patients with type 2 diabetes manage their blood glucose levels.

The European Commission approved marketing Tandemact for use by "patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus who show intolerance to metformin or for whom metformin is contraindicated and who are already treated with a combination of pioglitazone and glimepiride.”
